However, if you are sponsoring this award in the memory of a loved ones, please consider sponsoring this project for at least 5 to 10 to ensure the continuity of the award. Since this is a popular / appealing / attractive project for several sponsors, we are also proposing that you donate the equivalent amount up front to reserve this award for several years in the loving memory of your loved ones.

How does it work?: If you are signing up for 1 year, Rs.15,000 donation is required. However, if other sponsors come forward and sign up for the next year. you may not get the same project.

Why is this award setup this way?:  There is only one outstanding award and due to the nature of award, there will be several sponsors who are interested to claim this project. We want to ensure that other projects (for example, fogging the mosquitoes or garbage collection - which may have difficulty in getting the funding) are also funded through the upfront donation.

Due date:  We would like to hear from you by March 23 (in the next 3 weeks) to claim this award. The sponsor who claims this project for longer duration will be awarded this project.

[E.25] Education: Art / Music / Literature Education

Description:  Much of our education / learning is geared towards passing the exams, getting the ranks and rote learning. In order to develop all rounders from our schools, it is required to expose the students to arts (visual and performing arts), music education (teaching them an instrument) and encourage reading beyond the text books. This project encourages / provides the necessary logistical support to take up several mini-projects in this context. For example, we can have reading competition between schools over summer period. The class room / school which reads the most number of books will get a prize and recognition. Some of these books will be provided by / funded by this project.
Another example is .. we can invite a music teacher and take her/his help to teach recorder (a cheaper flute). These are cost-effective and encourages the students to appreciate the music education. Another example is .. having an art teacher and teaching art (through crayons, painting, etc.) and take once in a week art classes on rotation basis at each of the 6 schools.

[E.27] Education: Career Guidance Seminars

Description:  (proposed by Yalagala Mallikarjuna Rao) Many of the bright students may be making the wrong choices, or not going farther ahead in their education or career, due to lack of awareness of career options.  Many of the parents and elder generation may not be in a position to guide their children when it comes to education and studies. Some students are lucky to get such guidance from their teachers who have bigger influence in shaping them up in their life.  Inviting career counselors and arranging for career guidance seminars for 8th, 9th and 10th students will go long way in ensuring the success of current generation.

[C.13] Community: Tree Plantation
Description: (Proposed by Krishna Mohan Chennupati) If we can have trees planted in all possible common areas of our village and both sides of the roads leading to and from our village, I feel that will surely bring in good environmental change in the  long run. Though it’s ideal to have trees planted in our homes, but I see very little scope as majority of our village houses don’t have enough place inside their homes.

The triggering point behind this idea is living conditions are so hot and dry over a period of years, I could clearly feel the difference. Though we can attribute the reason behind this as global warming, but I feel we can do something locally to minimize those effects . On the other hand we are  loosing agriculture lands around the village  as the trend continues on real estate boom, which is also affecting our village resources.

My intention behind this idea is not to change the entire landscape of our village, but mainly to conserve our village resources /lands by keeping  environmentally green, clean and cool as well to the possible extent. So personally I felt the idea of planting trees is going supplement these needs in long run.

Few thoughts on sustainability of this project as per my knowledge.
1.       We need to maintain these trees for initial few months till they grow big enough with watering and by providing fence around each tree to protect from cows, buffalos.
2.       Selecting the right plants that are suitable for our village soil that can grow and  stay for longer periods.
3.       Choosing the right season and timing is important. May be starting this task right before the rainy season or during winter season.
4.       If possible start with low budget or limited number of trees and depending on how it goes we can take up more for next year and so on.

Type: One time Initiative with maintenance efforts going for 6 months or more.
Cost: Cost of plants and cost of fences around trees  and watering for initial months.

Hi,all the ideas on education are good. I support all those issues. But the main problem is who will monitor/ supervise and motivate (on day to day basis) both the children and teachers to use the felicities that we have provided.
I have seen many schools keeping all the library books/ sports materials kept in the cupboards and never opened. I have seen computers donated by NRIs lying on the table of H.M and never switched on.
The problem is not the lack of resources, it is lack of committed people who can ignite the whole education system in the school. Hence my sincere suggestion is let us first identify two self motivated teachers from the schools. Find out one volunteer from the village who can monitor/ discuss and resolve the issues and give us the feedback on monthly basis. We will support these three people financially paying them a decent honorarium every month. So that these 3 people who are within the system can really help us to identify the priorities and suggest the activities. They will conduct the free tutions, they will be monitoring whether all the material (books, toys, ipads, projectors etc) are utilised to the maximum extent or not.

Once we build a team of 3 to 4 people (Half of the team must be from the schools themselves), things will really workout.

Excellent comment. Yes. I agree! Unless there is commitment from the recipients, none of these ideas will fly.

We need to have a system where teachers, students, parents, volunteers, community (folks from the village) and vunnava diaspora - all are participating in these programs ensuring that there is respect, transparency, execution, progress, results.

More than the money, what is needed is the time commitment, belief that it will work and passion.

In every system, there will always be people who are passive, do not speak up, do not act, do not show passion, who have lost their soul. Those should not be our focus and we should not be dragged by them and we should not be discouraged by them.

You are right on point. We need to identify some folks who lead and drive by example. Some of the projects proposed will only work if the students and teachers take initiative. My belief is that there are certainly some (teachers and students and parents) who can step up and they set the example for others.

Starting a program is always a challenge. It will continue to be a challenge until the program becomes a routine for all of us. Till that point, we should be making the tweaks to the proposal, proposal, execution till we get it right.

Let us keep working on it till we get it right.
